You might feel like you can set up a paint shop in any space. This might be okay for small DIY projects, such as painting a small car or a motorcycle, but large projects requires a larger space. When you are painting trucks, tractors or implements, you need a painting area that provides more space than your driveway or car garage.
Before you get started, you need to locate a suitable building. This might be a warehouse, shop, barn or large garage. Whether you decide to use your own space or set up shop at another location, there are preparations you need to put in place before setting up a painting area.
- Thoroughly clean the area. Dust can ruin the finish of a paint job.
- Determine how much space you need, and section off the area with appropriate PVC pipes. If your project requires 30-feet or more, be sure to get longer pipes, such as five 8-foot pipes. You can always cut these down later.
- Mark your lengths, secure your pipes and then cut them appropriately. A PVC pipe cutter or hand saw is the best tool to use. Make sure you have a workbench in place. Also, make sure you have your connector joints, and use a sanding block to smooth the edges.
- Put your pipes together in a “T” shape, with the connectors. Continue fitting the PVC together until you have built a large cube. You are building the framework for the walls to your enclosure. When you assemble the pipes and joints, apply plenty of pressure to ensure a tight and secure fit.
- Enclose the PVC framework with plastic sheeting, including the floor to protect the surface. Apply duct tape and clamps to seal the sides. Position the drop cloth on the corners of the booth, lifting one end of the booth at a time.
- Use a fan in the painting area, as a deflector for paint dust. You do not want to breathe in any paint. You want to create a funnel effect, so secure the furnace filter with the tape, and put the fan on high.
